Sell all your amps and get a used AX8. There's that, too. A Fractal and a FRFR and you can have any sound at any volume level

I have yet to hear a good Ax into a FR speaker that sounded very good to me.
I've heard it sound really good through a PA, just not like that.
Saying that, I still want one, haha.

In my own case such as for the track ICS III on my new record I used the Mesa Studio preamp with lead mode, lead fat and lead bright on, then I set bass to 6, middle to 8 and treble to 8.
I used a humbucker equipped guitar in the bridge position (that stagemaster I got a while back). Then I back the tone off on the guitar - instead of fully maxed to 10 think 8 or 9 or so. Then my Vortex in the effects loop is ever so slightly clipping which seems to fatten the tone some - if you disable it it's thinner and less voice like. I'm using the TC Electronic GSharp in that same effects loop and just give it a tiny bit of reverb which fattens it a little bit more with the balance set to around one third effected signal and the rest the original.
I should do a video perhaps? I used a similar setting for the distorted guitars in "Tetrazond" where it's pretty thick and fat but that song used the VG-99 but set similarly to the Stu pre.
I'd also try some of the tips here - this guy discovered one of my tricks inadvertently:
His video isn't going to give you a Holdsworth sound unless you're this guy or the now deceased AH. A lot of it has to do with certain types of effects and the way they are ordered.

don't forget that sounding huge depends to a great extent on how the bass player interacts with the guitar. Page sounds heavy and huge because of the way JPJ is supporting from underneath. In my experience, most bass players are playing stuff that is poorly related to supporting the guitar solo

I do need to get that amp working again. Actually I should try to work on it today.
It has a killer distorted sound...really nice. It would be a good combo with my fender amp.
I'm playing with different pedals etc...trying to hone into a sound. I'm finding I want it to have that pushed over the line sort of sound... like you mentioned power amp overdrive, but also over driven input.

the larger factor is the cab. the choice there seems to make all the difference

May be true, but there is literally nowhere close I can really try cabs out (that are any good, not just line 6 or cheap Marshall cabs).
But saying that...the speakers in the legacy (which is a combo) sound good.

Plus...there is a big difference between how these sound in a music store, my house band practice, recording, and live....no wonder the Landaus of the world have 100 different amps in their collections .

Actually this a sound of be pretty happy with live...it requires delaying a cabinet 7 ms....and a few other tricks. I did this with a mix of the eleven rack and studio tricks.

So I've been thinking . For this particular band project...i want to scare people with the sound. I want them to go...wtf was that? Kind of like some of those Shawn Lane videos or Coltrane or something. Not only was Shawn a scary player, but that tone was noticeably different than most. And also just terrifying sounding to anyone who was around.
I played with my mxr phase 90 today...I'm not really sure about it on lead. It's got a sound, for sure, but it's kind of honky sounding for me. I think I'm missing some raw Marshall tone to my sound. Hmm..I did try my univibe pedal from Earthquakes (awesome pedal really) but sort of backing it off for just a touch of detuning kind of thing...might be able to get it to work...the sound I'm getting together though frankly isn't scary enough yet.
Got to keep tweekin

Ty Tabor had a huge sound. One of the best rock tones ever--very thick. Still not sure how he did it. Sco's sound is huge too and stands up right next to Lovano. It's tough to match a sax player though. Maybe you need more dB?

I never really got into kings x ..i have heard them a bit, but nothing ever stuck with me. Any suggestions for what you're talking about Shane?
Definitely agree that Sco seems to hold his own with sax...he has quite the sound. Though most of the guys he plays with are play pretty "nice", even Lovano, despite his huge harmonic vocabulary is somewhat a quiet player compared to Brecker, Trans, etc...the dude i play with has that huge tenor sound, even compared to most tenor players. So not sure if Sco would be as even sounding then or not? (Probably would since he's just an insanely awesome player)

I love the way they feel in my fretting hand, but love the way 11s and 12s feel on my picking hand. So love hate. I like the spanky sound of 9s too, for everything but jazz and maybe blues.
