You didn't do it out in the garage? You did it in a sealed room in the basement with no ventilation?

Don't want those expensive fumes getting away. Actually, it's too dusty outside ... The amount of pollen and crap in the air is crazy

fuck. the can of reranch primer is a dud. started out okay but about 30 seconds into it the can just freaked out and shot gobs of primer all over the body. It's pretty fucked up even after sanding it all the way back down. Hopefully I can get a new can and build up some good layers to cover up this shit.

Yikes. Lets hope it doesn't catch on fire. I could sell it on TGP for $5K as a "relic"

Looking very cool. That fretboard is indeed nice! I am looking forward to seeing the finished product and the sonic madness that will result from it

Okay, I received the new can of primer and no problems this time. The old can was under-pressurized. Updated photo gtroblq.blogspot.com/2012/05/egos-warmoth-partscaster.htmlOnward to the color coats. I just ordered a respirator so it will be next week when I get going on that. Indoors, no dust. I'm feeling pretty confident.

Out of curiousity have you been keeping a running total of cost? And in particular it will be interesting how it compares to other in that price range and other price ranges.

Out of curiousity have you been keeping a running total of cost? And in particular it will be interesting how it compares to other in that price range and other price ranges. That's a great question. Basically, I'll put as much into this guitar as I would a custom order from G&L. I think about $1400 at the end. Not exactly a way to save $ on a guitar. However, I couldn't get this guitar from G&L or Fender... Things that I took into consideration: It is fun; some frustrations and mistakes but a learning opportunity. I've already learned a lot. And if nothing else anything that lets me learn is totally worth it. I dig research and reading more than anything so this is right up my alley. I get things I like that are not widely available all in one instrument (such as the asymmetrical neck carve, compound radius neck, and the stainless frets)....not to mention other features like the body cuts and chambered body, etc. The kingwood fretboard is unbelievable. It's the best feeling fretboard surface I've ever experienced. On top of all this you get some experience that translated in reverse such as liberating yourself from a repair guy / guitar shop to take care of things. When this is all said and done I'll own more tools that will enable me to re-fret guitars, leveling, crowning.... nut files, a good soldering iron, and things like that so I'll be able to swap out pickups, etc. These kinds of things I always left to others. The tools pay for themselves pretty quickly when you look at it like that. The next guitar I do will come in costing less and I can see this developing such that I can build more of it from scratch .... Maybe in 20 years I'll be making guitars from raw lumber. Who knows. Not for making money but just to have fun and see what develops. I thought it would be a good idea to start with a lot of the instrument pre-made and then work backward by increments over time to the final destination when you're doing most of it yourself. And, not least, it lets my wife get involved when she wants. I think she's pretty much had it with "guitar buying" but when it becomes a project like this she gets involved. I'd like to help my kids or grandkids make guitars for their own use if they want to do that.

not amazed by the results of two cans of color (not bad but I thought it could be better) so I wet sanded the whole thing down to the first layer of color (down to the primer in a few spots) and ordered another can.
The typical route is to keep adding more and more paint until it looks good but I am trying to avoid a ton of finish on the body. Thin skin rather than heavy coat of armor if that makes sense.

Is the result the quality of paint or painting experience?

Is the result the quality of paint or painting experience? The paint itself seems outstanding. ;D
