I have to think that basswood, despite the carbon skin, is just too floppy for a neck.

I've heard that complaint before. Also of potential interest is that what is considered "basswood" is more variable than we suspect. Real basswood is a fine guitar wood but at some point in the late 80s some kind of cheaper 'basswood' was sought out to lower costs and it does not perform well at all due to its softness. A lot of 80s shredder guitars with this shitty 'basswood' had their bridges fall out over time but the 'good stuff' does not suffer from this. Maybe Parker wasn't always using the 'good stuff' .... We'll never know I guess.

I've got a basswood tree out to the side of the house that's been there for almost 50 years now. I suspect that if it ever falls I'll be using it to create some guitar bodies.
