Just ask Dan Stearns how open and accepting the jazz community is. A few are welcoming but there's definitely a "nose in the air" conceit, especially towards music they consider beneath themselves. I experienced it myself a little at UT in Knoxville--and I wasn't going all metal. I was new to it and didnt have many tools at the time.

It's like that in any sphere of life, unfortunately. The visual arts, lit., academia is filled to the brim with shitheads.

My point thougb Shane was that I haven't found a genre in music that isn't like that. There is so much snobbery in metal, rock, folk, jam bands, classical.
I play in all those styles and see it a the time . Jazz isn't special that way. In fact it seems way more communal than rock and pop to me. Rock and pop acts like a bunch of individual groups, jazz is all about collaborations.

I can't tell you how many times folk and singer songwriters have told me jazz and metal aren't even real music.
And then if I play folky...cause I like to....the metal guys tell me how it's lame music 101 level music. And the whole time the classical community doesn't think any of it was real music . (I went to a conservatory for jazz and classical playing an instrument neither community respects).
It's only a small percentage though . Most jazzers I know love spreading the word.

I've played in a lot of rock bands. I've also interacted with the academic jazz crowd at UT in Knoxville. There's a difference in my experience. Sorry to disagree but I disagree. There are disproportionate assholes in jazz; it's called vibing.

Sorry you had that experience. Not that way for me at all. I came in as a meathead and have only ever been treated very well.
