I'm going for the "your parents hate it " approach. Could work.

I agree with the article, but most folks just don;t want to know.

It's also true that a certain part of the jazz world is fairly closed minded and snobbish when it comes to music or sound that isn't "jazz." From that particular echo chamber, they come with their own prejudices.

Certainly, but I see the biggest problem is people hear Kenny G and say..."I hate jazz". They don't have any clue what jazz actually is.

Or they hear a jam band and think that's jazz.

I thought this was interesting:
Typical: knowledge hoarding and dismissive "don't join in our secret club" thing among other issues. Neely kind of nails it on the head.

Yep. That's the jazz culture. You'd think they'd be all welcoming and supportive. But no, there's a lot of assholery that's got nothing to do with nurturing creative younglings.

Some of that crowd would even show Coltrane the exits.

Interesting, my experience in the jazz community, in general, has been very welcoming. Sure there are some asshats, but I actually see a lot less assholes in jazz then I do in metal (talk about some difficult gates to find the keys too).
There is a bit of an expectation though, however I don't think that's different than any other music. If you haven't even taken the time to somewhat explore the "style" of jazz, or even attempt to understand any of the lingo or what not, then just go up and shred in A minor pentatonic, you're going to be given some looks.
But if I go to an open mic and shred...I'll be given worse looks. If I audition for a pop band and shred, I'll get worse looks. If I come to a metal band audition with a roland jazz chorus and a ES175, I'm gonna get some looks.
What music crowd is even close to be all accepting?
