I was preparing to make the joke that this was how Hendrix heard it during the recording and then they made that joke. Bastards.

I didn't really listen thoroughly because the banter was a little lame. , but I don't think they discussed the octavizer controversy. At the time of the album release octavizer's could only do lower octaves like the common one's boss makes, you only have the option of going one or two octaves lower than the note your playing. These days there are harmonizer pedals that can play all intervals including the higher octave. The controversy is: it sounds like jimi is getting a higher octave coming out from the note he's actually playing even though that shouldn't have been possible because that technology hadn't been invented yet. So how did he do it? Anybody else ever hear about this?

Never mind, the pedal was invented by roger Mayer especially for jimi It was called the Octavia. I guess the podcast I was listening to was just misinformed and apparently very full of shit. Oops.

Yeah, there is a type of fuzz that sort of generates an octave above what you are playing, but not exactly. What it does is closer to accentuating the harmonic that is an octave higher than what you are playing.
It does this with diodes. It is the same process by which AC is turned to DC, but in an octave up fuzz, the process isn't completed.
