They know their market. Quite a contrast from the humble guitar shop when I was getting started. Here's the obituary for the owner: "he hosted a continuous jam session with anyone who happened in. He wanted so much to put a guitar in every person’s hands who had a desire to play, and did all that he could to do just that." In hindsight I'm positive his attitude, that environment he fostered, was more vital to all the local guitar students than media guitar heroes. There were no cars in the showroom. Dick McGowan obituary
His shop on the left of the theater, a bar to the right where if I recall correctly a young Trent Reznor played cover tunes with my guitar teacher.

Yeah, sure: the fingerboard isn't scalloped.

A good friend of mine owned a music store for about 7 years before going bankrupt. He started right around the time the online music stores were taking over, unfortunately. It is not a great industry to be in. There just isn't any money in it. The crazy deals you have to vendors, etc... they really don't favor the smaller stores at all ( I suppose that's true of everything).
You have to have some gimmick to survive. Retail, in general, is tough when you have a store front. Most people just go in to try something and find a better price online for it. Which you can't blame them.
Being that I've been a musician for so long, I never realized just how LITTLE the music industry is. Particularly guitars. They are so incredibly niche. Rob, my friend with the store, was quick to point it out to me. I was very naive (still am, I'm sure).

I can't remember the last time I went to one. I need to hit a local one here. Apparently they have several jam sessions during the week and serve food/beer. Like you said--a gimmick helps.

Wow, some of those cars/guitars are pretty slick.

I'm told by my tame guitar shop owner that certain musical instrument companies are absolute bastards to deal with. They were told by a certain well-known old-school Californian company's rep that they would lose their account if they stocked anything that resembled one of their guitars if you covered up the headstock.

The place in the OP is nutty. Is that a Thomas Hart Benton painting?
I actually go to one of the local small stores to pay too much for strings because I like the guys who work there. They actually do pretty well. Their new stock is sensible and they somehow end up with decent used gear.
