Headed up North again (8th year) next week: www.fimav.qc.ca/en/Cline (in a group I have never seen), Gyan Riley, Colin Stetson (x3) and Braxton solo. Pretty psyched. I will report after. Bruce

Right on. Stetson has a new metal-ish band. And how's the poutine up there?

Right on. Stetson has a new metal-ish band. And how's the poutine up there? His metalish band is playing. Victoriaville claims to be the birthplace of poutine - lots of tasty bad decisions to make.

That bass player who used to live in our spare bedroom would try to do as much as he could to get there. His highlight was driving Chris Squire of Yes to a holistic grocery store (interesting that he was there to catch some bands) and having a nice conversation on the way.

"That bass player who used to live in our spare bedroom" ... This is one the best recurring characters in our shared internet. He just comes up now and then, and that identity says more than his birth name ever could.
For a while there, Victoriaville seemed like mecca for thrilling new music. I'm glad it's still thriving.

I always think I should try to go to this and never do. Maybe next year.

It is interesting in that some shows are great, some are disappointing - always get some surprises. I really like that you see the whole thing - no decisions to make. Multi stage festivals annoy me. I also like that there are so few distractions in town - not much else to do. It is also funny that the festival is run in such an old fashioned way - paper tickets, no photos, the worst record label website in the world.

33 years! www.fimav.qc.ca/en/the-festival/the-teamI must've learned about it in the 90s when I started reading Musicworks and The Wire, and sometimes they attached sampler CDs. You'd just listen to what they curated, like it or not. I think it was healthy exposure to a variety I wouldn't necessarily choose. I think the internet is great but it's so easy to rapidly sift what we like from what we don't, and miss out on informed programs like FIMAV.

Agree, but sometimes they miss (don't we all?) - Laibach and Magma both sucked a lot. Also, the level of Zorn worship is tough at times. 33 years! www.fimav.qc.ca/en/the-festival/the-teamI must've learned about it in the 90s when I started reading Musicworks and The Wire, and sometimes they attached sampler CDs. Wow, Magma was bad?
How so?
Not your cup of tea or did they do a bad show?

Not my things, and somewhat overblown/boring to me. Honestly, I am not huge on prog to start with. Musically I found the Magma show to be meh. Wow, Magma was bad? How so? Not your cup of tea or did they do a bad show?

A great year this year. Some thoughts:
1) Nels Cline (with Julian Lage) was amazing. Great writing, tight, clean technical playing. Probably my favorite time I have seen Cline. 2) Anthony Braxton still brings it at 71. 80 minute solo perfrmance on alto. 3) Gyan Riley played with his dad (Terry). Played electric, rather than classical he is better known for. Great show. 4) Tim Brady sucks. My second time seeing him. Bad tone (no treble and no warmth), sloppy, mediocre writing. Sounded like a shitty Yngwie kind of thing. 5) Nate Wooley was awesome. 19 piece band with one long piece. 6) Colin Stetson played three times. All good. His hard rock / jazz band, Ex Eye was great. 7) Battle Trance (tenor sax quartet) was cool. 8) Senyawa was surprise hit. Folk, world, jazz, black metal in a blender.
