So I put the lowest bid on a guitar the other day just to satisfy a desire to put a bid down fully expecting to get outbidded...well I didn't. So I just got myself a new guitar. It's a Schecter Hellraiser with a floyd. It's original floyd rose special which means I need to put 80 bucks into a new block and saddles/ but otherwise is the same. It also has EMG 85/81 combo (totally metal dude) I actually used to have a strat with the DG20s (same as David Gilmour) and that was really nice but right handed. So I've never really been super opposed to them and there are a few guys who use them that I really like...so?? I guess we'll see. Was only 300 bucks so?? Can't really complain about that. I've wanted a metalmeister for awhile; the Carvin is the closest thing I have to a metal monster. So what the heck. I guess we'll see. Here's a pic. Plus I kind of want to do a jazz gig with it! Could be fun!

Floyds have really come back in a big way in the last few years. I never got along with them particularly well but I'm glad to see they haven't been totally exiled to the lands of metal, if they are in fact a useful flexible tool.
Then again, that thing is called a Hellraiser? So I guess that's somewhat prescriptive.
I once had an EMG81 in a cheap strat that sounded eerily close to Brian May, into a Tube Screamer and a tiny amp. Weird discovery I wasn't looking for.
So yeah.

I have avoided Floyds over the years, but the 80's Ibanez I bought in a junk shop a couple of months back has me converted. If I break in the strings correctly when putting them on, it is super stable and I hardly have to move the fine tuners much before the next string change.
I used to really like EMG's, but I always felt that if I wanted to go back and forth between guitars, they were too different than the passive pickups in other guitars, so I am pretty much all passive now.
I don't think there is any reason you couldn't do a jazz gig with it.

I really had no intention of getting it; but what the heck. Haha.
I think I'm going to put a big brass block; new springs; saddles in it (which I'm tempted to buy now) but I'll wait till I get it first.
I guess I need to start buying 9 volt batteries.

As long as you unplug the cable from the guitar when you are nit using it, the batteries last a very long time.

No problem for jazz - neck pickup and roll half the tone back. Congrats!

Got the guitar today.
It plays really easy, the neck is nice and wide (I much prefer this) and the EMGs sound pretty darn good actually especially clean. Overall I think it will be fun. I'm a big whammy bar fan, so having a floyd should yield some interesting possiblities, you can really beat the shit out of that thing can't you??
Pretty sweet. Very nice looking too!

Cool, Mirth. So what's it like? How does it compare to your other guitars? What can it do uniquely?
