Had a coworker come by to talk guitars yesterday. This guy has tons of gear, but I have never heard him play. He is buying a custom-made relic... It was hard for me to be civil. Still don't understand relics. Bruce

The factors I get for builder and player, unless the player is in a tribute band, support stone washed blue jeans, not distressing to the point of putting holes and tears in the pants. If a player is uncomfortable with a shiny new guitar, I'm not offended. Dull up the finish a bit, take the gleam of the hardware, fine.
When I was picking my wedding ring the thing was way too shiny for me as a guy who doesn't wear any jewelry or watch. I had them do a finish effect on the surface to turn it down. (Funny thing is that wear and time are polishing some shine back onto it.)

People like their stuff to look like they've seen things, man. Maybe coworker dude is assembling a virtual tribute band, gotta look the part for the virtual audience.

No way. When I get a guitar I want it to be new and spotless for as long as possible. If a ding appears, it will be added by me at some point eight or ten years into ownership. That Soloist I've had for 15 years can pass for new. The Heartfield, probably not but it still looks good.
I need my stuff to last and look great and rock hard (sounds like a Kramer ad).

I work with someone who plays bass and has a Dream Theater poster signed by all members of the band on his office wall, along with a Lamborghini poster.
If talk turns to music, we generally discuss stuff he likes, because I have heard of it.

There are a number of people who probably think I'm pulling one over their eyes because 90% of the bands I mention they've never heard of.

After six or seven albums, ambient artist has a break-out international hit. I happened to have been aware of the history before the hit because I listened to a lot of weird radio. Classmate is nuts over the single, talks about it. I mention the back catalog. She accuses me of making shit up, that of course that is the artist's first album. Okay, whatever you say.
