OK we've all heard about the loudness war.
Check this thread at TGP:

Then check to see where your favorite recordings stack up (with apps for Mac and PC):

My own "this is" recording ranges from about 10-14 but one track rates a 7 (the oldest track in that collection).
Interesting that that Dire Straits recording lost half its dynamic range over successive remasterings.
