Living in Akron, where The Black Keys are from, I don't doubt this article. definitely easier to plan rehearsals.

The two member band thing has been going on for a while now. It seems to me it peaked a few years ago.

Apparently, there is an episode of Judge Judy where the topic of two member bands comes up. I haven't seen it, but many people have told me about it. One member of a two person band is suing the other member. The judge says she has never heard of a two person band, and could they name another. Lightning Bolt is mentioned and she repeats the name, incredulously.
She asks her bailiff if he has heard of a two person band and he says something to the effect of "Steely Dan, I guess."

And don't forget local band Falcon Arrow - this is them playing their song "Petit Bit":
They played the same venue I played a day earlier at the same time. The next year they showed up again but were a heck of a lot louder which made them less enjoyable but they're still cool.
They play with TVs running old movies.
