Actually that got me thinking. In the last four or five years my father-in-law (he passed away 1/1/11) was divesting himself of his old ham radio hobby and was selling giant packages of NOS tubes to some outfit on the east coast.
I took a look at what was left (he had no real idea I had any interest in old tubes at all) but he had some pretty nice stuff but a lot of it he had shipped out.
But he did have some Mullard tubes as well as some other things that were quite stellar. He was an old school radio operator for the merchant marine in world war II so he had not only receivers but transmitters as well. After the war he was employed as an engineer at a local radio station in addition to teaching radio theory at a local college. A brilliant guy with a keen analytical mind.
One of the thing he gave me before he passed was a huge, built-like-a-tank, hammarlund shortwave radio (tube) full mil-spec everything.
I gotta open it up and see what tubes that beastie uses but it would make a spectacular boat anchor or paperweight. It probably weighs twice what my guitar rack does.
I gotta concoct myself a longwire antenna and start listening to the spy numbers stations at 2 a.m. like I did when I was 13.

That would be well worth firing up. Sadly there is nothing left on Short Wave to listen to anymore. Even teletype transmissions like Reuters transferred to satellite. I got a TX in the late 70's from the States listing everyone working in the White House starting at the President and ending some two hours later with the cleaning staff. Wish I had kept the print out.

Well there's cool stuff like spy numbers stations and whatnot. But yeah, the pirate radio stations are interesting too and sometimes you'll hear stuff you really shouldn't have been able to hear. More later.
