Well I initially went to college for a music degree, then went back years later for an engineering degree, so I have two college years, haha. Hmm, for the first college venture it's really hard to say, I was exploring so much music at the time. Getting into serious classical and serious jazz stuff a lot. Lots of Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Mozart as well as Coltrane, Mingus, and Dizzy. As far as bands, at the time I was pretty into the whole prog thing, so Dream Theater and the like. However, the album and band that really took me over the top was Mr. Bungle's California. I remember the girlfriend I had at the time was talking to me on the phone and I had picked up that album, and had it on. At one point I had no idea what she was saying and interrupted with "This might be the most amazing thing I've ever heard".
I still love that album.
And since I just finished up my engineering degree not to long ago, I'd say Chris Crocco is the "band" that's probably made the most impact on me in a long long time.

I was constantly listening to weird artists that few knew who they were.
Locally Minneapolis was a hotbed of that stuff so "legendary" bands like the Replacements, Husker Du and Soul Aslylum were just local bar bands who sometimes were were able to gig with that got lucky later.
For some reason I was big into Steve Tibbetts "YR" - and it wasn't just any old copy, it was one of the independently pressed versions that was on the Frammis label on LP and for some reason the version I found (which I still have a copy on cassette) didn't have the bass guitar in the mix!
So when I heard the ECM version on CD years later boy was I surprised to hear the aggressive distorted bass guitar all over the album - it made a great album better.
Bob Hughes - where is he now? he could really play too.

Between 1991-1995 (my undergraduate years), I would have to say that Nine Inch Nails was my favorite band - To this day, Reznor's approach to music has a huge influence on me.

It was all pre-Collins take over of Genesis and Floyd for me back then. It seemed so fresh after being a hard core NWOBHM fan for so long.
