I finally got around to watching this, and I think it is pretty well done. There aren't a whole lot of links on the net, or rather there are, but mostly about the film. I believe there used to be a comprehensive site at www.toynbee.net, but it isn't there now. I remember seeing the tiles in Pgh years ago, and assuming it was a local artist(there are plenty of folks here who do things in a similarly mysterious yet public fashion, I assume it is the same in any mid to large sized city). It was only in recent years that I realized these were done by someone else, and in the case of these three, probably the original tiler or someone closely affiliated with him. |

This is so interesting. I'm a sucker for "occult" (for lack of a better term) scripts woven into the mundane processes of society at large, the unnoticed forces that shape us. I love how people interpret symbolic intricacies and the unknown, if they do, or if they're simply pleased to be mystified.
If you're of an age, some of you might remember the baffling JR Bob Dobbs smiling pipe face stickers that would inexplicably appear in random locations. The playful religious scam is amusing enough, but it was the wondering and projecting what it could mean that gave it power.
chrome, is it easy enough to describe where the three Pburgh mosaics are located? And is there any effort to preserve them where they are, or are they just some strange folk thing at the whim of development?

There is no effort to preserve them, they will likely be paved over eventually.
There were at least two others here that are gone, possibly more.
Those three are all in crosswalks on Smithfield street and easily found. The cross streets are Forbes, Oliver and Seventh.

I watched the film on netflix last night. Fascinating, eerie and compelling. It started getting weirder and weirder and had a somewhat satisfying conclusion.

I am in DC for business and tried to find some of these I saw listed on the internet with no success... Since the original tiler hasn't worked outside the Phila area since 2002, these will get harder to find due to resurfacing, I suppose. |
