I have used D'Addario almost forever. However, on the Bilt they will ship GHS. That is their standard, so I went with it. They also use a bit heavier than I am used to, but we will see.
BTW - i think that D'Addario are actually made in NY. I could be mistaken, but I seem to remember some 5S / TQM / Bullshit video a couple of years ago about them...

Been using Thomastik-Infelds for over ten years on practically all my instruments. Why? I was looking around for a decent Jazz guitar, saw this guy in London that had just the sound I was looking for on a Gibson ES175. So we chatted for a while and he put me on to these strings, flatwound 12's. He told me just to string the ES330 I had with those and I'd get the sound I was looking for. He was right. I've also used other strings, the KR116 are classically weighted nylon strings with a steel core - yes you can use a normal pickup! OK - they are more expensive but give results that really do make a big difference. I really like their bronze acoustic with a heavy bottom. www.thomastik-infeld.com

Well, hell. I just opened a brand new box of D'Addario 9-42 that I always use on my ASAT and the intonation was way off on the wound strings and they look and feel EXACTLY like the Ernie Ball strings I just bought. They have both switched to the same material and/or supplier. Ugh.

A wake up call?

I think I'll skip these guys. Feels like ordering strings from NASA or something.

I put a set of D'Addario 9-42 on my ASAT and the B string is just a freak.
I measured the 1st and 2nd strings with a caliper and found that the top string measured 009 in 4 places and 0085 in another; the B string which should measure 011 was all over the place: 010, 011, 010, 105, and 0095 (five measurements and none of which came up to .012).

The 105 measurement was a surprise!

If you're a D'Addario EXL or EB Slinky guy I can recommend the SIT power wounds to you. They're only 2.95 a pack, you get two extra strings, less paper waste, and they feel just as good as the other guys and sound better than the Slinky but not quite as good as the D'Addarios
The SIT actually do stay in tune really well. Better than the other brands in this price bracket.
If you go through a lot of strings or just want to save some money on big bulk order this could be the way to go.

I used to use SIT for those very reasons. Off them now, but in a pinch I'd use them again.

Does anyone know if there is any significant difference between the sound of various manufactures of plain (unwound) strings?
And: does anyone make a string reinforced at the ball-end, other than Slinky RPS, or similar string designed for vibrato bridges?
