I think what irritates me about this guitar is the impression, and maybe I'm off target, that it's just a random jumble of materials as if the design was arrived at by spinning a wheel, i.e., a 'mindless' product -- not 'created' but randomly 'produced'...hell, a chimp could have just as easily concocted that thing

Maybe that's how they show their spontaneity, but its not particularly creative. Oh well, they haven't been particularly creative in awhile anyways. Maybe this is a sign you can build your own Gibson guitar by putting all tour favorite pieces from their lineup of axes.

That might be a good idea: the Gibson Construct-O-Guitar Kit. You get a neck, 3 headstocks, etc.....just snap everything together and mix and match as your mood varies..... ;-)

That being said I still dig the old L5-S custom - a really classy axe. Too bad they were all made in Michigan by the guys who run Heritage now and the "Custom Shop" axe produced in the 2005-timeframe as a "reintroduction" was probably ghost built (according to Ed Roman anyway).

How did we forget this masterpiece?

Uh yeah, that thing literally reminds me of those suckers they would sell at candy shops to kids that were much bigger than you could safely eat in one sitting. By the time 20 minutes had passed you'd sit there with a vaguely sick feeling and just looking at that guitar brings up the same feeling.
What about that Zakk Wylde SG meets Explorer monstrosity? I think it was orange with black striping. Utterly abominable.

I don't know why, but I don't hate this guitar. Maybe, because my mom never let me have those lollipops?

I think Gibson has strayed a bit too far from their core (making great guitars for guitar players) and have, sadly, become something of a lifestyle company. ) This is literally what has happened, and I stumbled upon confirmation a few years ago. A music store owner that I used to work for told me that somehow the president of Gibson (his name escapes me at the moment) and the president of Harley Davidson had become buddies, and that the HD pres. told him that in order to truly elevate Gibson to a new level, they had to do what Harley had done: turn the product into a lifestyle. A bit harder with instruments, but it looks like that's exactly what they're trying to do. Does anyone think it's working?

I just got a flyer from guitar center in the mail today. It has the new Alex Lifeson model Les Paul from Gibson. It's interesting because it's a Les Paul with the all access neck joint but it also has a Floyd Rose tremelo and the most interesting part is the bridge contains a piezo. It's got the ability to mix the regular guitar sound and the piezo thru the main output OR you can run both outputs simultaneously (the piezo can be isolated in a setup they call "Life-o-Sound") so you could do a "heavy rock sound" from the magnetic pickups and a "clean acoustic sound for the verses of the song" type of deal or both at the same time for a blitzkrieg.
Cost? $3999 or if you want it autographed by Alex Lifeson himself fork out $5999 and there will only be 50 of the autographed model.
They obviously had to charge an extra 2 g's to get Alex to fly into the factory and sit down for an afternoon and autograph 50 guitars and pay him for his time but wow.
Even the lower priced one is a bit spendy for that type of capability (which I can do with my strat now with the addition of the GK3 and add in the hex guitar capabilities of the VG99 but it's not really a Les Paul mind you).
Still, it sure looks nice.

That signature sure makes someone look bad... I mean it shouldn't cost anymore, they should just be the ones they sell first. What a mess. I hope Alex is getting like 90% of that extra 2 grand per guitar (though he's probably getting shit). Oh well, I could practically buy 6 pimped out Carvins for the price of that guitar, that all probably play better and sound better.

Does anyone think it's working? Good question. It depends I suppose. It isn't fooling seasoned guitar players, but, then again, if you're aiming to shift into the lifestyle and branding biz, then it might very well be working. Hard to know, really. They've succeeded in making a spectacle out of the company, that's for sure...but that does not preclude it being 'successful.' No Gibbys for me, thanks ;D

With the overpricing of their guitars now, they probably only have to sell 1 for every 3 they used to sell to make the same profit. So its probably working.
I can definitely see the Harley Davidson comparison ...overpriced, bad quality control, known competition better at everything and half as expensive, people still swear by them and think everything else is junk.

While Gibson has certainly made many mis-steps lately, I actually like the looks of the Korina LP from the original post in this thread.
I am not so wild about the Zoot Suit SG, Dusk Tiger, Firebird with computer thing, etc.
Also, I know it is fashionable to bash Gibson, but I used to run the Sound Reinforcement and later the Installation departments of a company that also had a store that was a Gibson dealer. I bought two Gibsons that could never quite be made to play correctly, in my opinion. These were cheaper models, but the salesmen would occasionally tell me about guitars in the $2-3k range with the same types of issues(mine both had slight back bow's with the truss rod nut loose and 11's on the guitar).
