....since I sold the Suhr. I have been scouring eBay, almost bidding on a variety of cheap guitars with Floyds, but never committing. Out of the blue, the following appears at the flea market I go to most weeks, Japanese Kramer from the 80s with original Floyd (not licensed): As god is my witness the guy said he wanted 3 dollars. I gave him 5 and told him to keep the change. I need to put new strings on and set it up, but I have a feeling this will work out. I'll throw a Bill Lawrence pickup in there, as well.

Wonder why so cheap? You got a great deal. And it's in really good shape too.

Wonder why so cheap? You got a great deal. And it's in really good shape too. The guy selling it had a truck full of random junk and I get the feeling he wanted rid of all of it. I don't know if the guitar was originally his or if he found it somewhere with the rest of the junk. While it's structurally sound, it was super filthy. It had to have been sitting in an attic/basement/abandoned house for a long time without a case.

I still think it must have been a psychological experiment by a three letter agency in the government to watch what you would do if they let you have it for that price. That's totally insane but good for you!

Another idea for frugal musicians who might want to get gear not so cheaply priced is the five dollar bill challenge.
My friend told me about this one. It is: if you purchase anything (gasoline/petrol, groceries, other necessities) and you receive a $5 bill in change, take one of the $5 and place it in an envelope or shoebox for a year and after a year see how much you have set aside for "fun frivolous purchases". Repeat the process.
The challenge is to avoid looking at the bills or doing anything with them until a year passes rather than spending them on other things.
Anyone else play little games like that?

the problem with that is it's not earning interest. the last nine years the markets have been going like gangbusters -- some folks taking in better than 25% returns on equities.
Better idea. Just toss 2K into a Vanguard Roth account set to high growth / high risk and hope for the best....if you win you buy new gear, if you lose you wait for another year ;-)

Hah! Already have done that actually. But that's for "retirement" not gear.
When I left my last job my entire 401k from that particular job got dumped into a Roth and that's gotten significantly engorged. The 401k from my current corporate gig is swelling like a tick as well.
But that being said....with Chrome here getting himself $5 superstrats, well, he might not need a lot of gear. $100 could outfit a whole band at that rate.
