I poured through those things like mad when I was a kid. I still have various realistic items for various audio purposes but they mainly are in storage these days. But yeah, and who can forget the 5-cell flashlight? Anyone still have one of those?

I found a massive maglight flashlight on the side of a highway once. It holds something like 9000 batteries

Definitely used to dream about getting a lot of those things. In the 1980s, it was a standard stop for us at the mall. Used to sit, watch, and mess with the TRS-80s (I think they were called).

Yep. And now I have a flashlight/bike headlight smaller than a smartphone that's so retina searingly bright (750 lumen) it's ridiculous.
Those catalogs contain a piece of my childhood somewhere. Reminds me of the neighborhood "cool dad" Mr. Seger who would weld metal for fun, build remote controlled airplanes, built a balsawood airplane with a rubber band motor that would go for a mile, drove a sports car. His workshop was a bit of a wonderland, had every tool you could imagine.
Today I realize that he was probably a guy who while he had a rare doting wife who encouraged his pursuits his own kids never were quite that cool. Oh well.
