So in an effort to continue making the Carvin DC400 my go to live guitar, I ordered a Sustainiac pickup. I don't really like the neck pickup in the Carvin anyways, and always kind of wanted that infinite sustain (I'm envious of Sax players after all). I'm starting to accept that I'm using a lot of shredder guy stuff but in a more jazz fashion (or at least trying). I do find it amusing to use a sustainer in a jazz gig (which I will do, guaranteed, hopefully at the end of the month).
I went with the Sustainiac over the Sustainer (fernandes) for a few reasons.
1) to get the harmonic mode stuff, the sustainiac was cheaper (like 125 cheaper). 2.) Apparently the battery life on the sustainer is like 2 hours, where the sustainiac is like 30 hours. 3.) Installation is supposed to be easier (and customer support is top notch) 4.) Passive mode, the sustainiac apparently sounds pretty darn good (like a 59). The Fernandes pickup is apparently unusable (lifeless).
Seemed like a no brainer.
Here's to hoping it works out alright!
I'll keep you posted.
BTW: it is sort of annoying how to order these things, you have to order from Sustainiac.com and the Sustainer one is not at most music stores and reviews are pretty awful for Fernandes customer support.

sounds like a good decision. Never had one myself but thought about it from time to time

Negative. That could possibly change the way you play.

I briefly had a Fernades with their unit in it.
It was cool, but mostly useful with low gain or at low volumes.
Playing loud with a lot of gain made it a little harder to control.
I would like to have another. I am keeping my eye out for maybe a used Schecter with their sustainer and a Floyd.

Looks like it's coming today, which is cool...the question is do I risk putting it in my guitar tonight, knowing I need the guitar for tomorrow. Haha. (for a gig)

I tried one in a 7-string schecter guitar that was at a store. Boy, that thing was so addictive at room temperature acoustically that through an amp it would be like a heroin addict after a while, you would never NOT use it. Oy. People end up dead for sustaining that long.
Thinking.....wait until AFTER the gig.
Wait, isn't that Carvin a neck through? Don't you get good sustain with it already?

Sure the sustain is decent on that guitar, but who wouldn't want infinite sustain? Plus the harmonic mode will be fun!
I'm not very good at waiting....

Having a broken guitar for a gig would be a terrifying prospect!

Sure, but I could use something else if I had to. Playing safe isn't really my bag. If I want to be fearless on the stage, I should be fearless everywhere else, or something.
I'm not a perfectionist, life is an improvisation, or something.
