There are more heroes than you can shake a stick at, aren't there? YouTube is filled with unknown or relatively unknown "guitar gods." I'm thinking right now of Guthrie Govan and really talented players like him. He's an unknown commodity outside of guitar circles. In earlier decades, he probably would have eventually gotten a gig and broader exposure, like Buckethead managed. I believe that what we're seeing with declining guitar sales could just be a continuation in the decline of the music industry, in general, due to the proliferation of technology. Killed record stores. Killing professional studios. This is just another offshoot of the trend.

I don't think anyone has to know you at all to be a "hero", but maybe "guitar hero"
Govan is definitely a guitar hero that most guitarists know now, however pretty much no guitarists or at least guitar fans know him.
Saying that I know plenty of people who don't know Clapton and Santana or that Jimmy Page is a guitarist.
Guitar just isn't as popular as one would believe.
I agree with Shane too that declining sales dont necessarily mean that it's failing...there are so many damn guitars out there. Probably billions at this point, it's completely saturated and Fender and Gibson conti dually hurt their name.
It's like the beer market where Coors and Budweiser sales are going down but the micro brew world is booming (thankfully).

Govanism peaked in 2013.

in guitar hero terms, govan is pretty much a non-entity compared to the old dogs gtroblq.blogspot.com/2017/07/is-guthrie-govan-todays-guitar-god.htmlthere are no heroes in a world where e. guitar sales have declined by half a million units over ten years. taylor swift may get some women into guitar but it will be mostly acoustic and they tend not to fetishize gear so that's bad news for a whole segment of the industry

Do those statistics track used sales? I haven't bought a new guitar in forever, but have bought 10 or so used ones in the last 8 years.

About three months ago I checked to see how many el. guitars were for sale on Reverb and checked back about once per week. Over the last few months there's about 25 more guitars per day ... day after day.... now approach 82K. Wow

Govanism. 👍 I guess we missed our chance to start a new religion, eh Mark?
I agree with Tim that market saturation might be playing a role too. There's definitely waning guitar interest in the present, but not so much that used Ibanez JEMs aren't still commanding exorbitant prices. I sold mine 7 years after buying it new and I made $600! That's the only guitar I've ever sold that went up in value (or perceived value). Same today. Buying one used (if in good shape) or new is going to cost a lot of money.
Then after that sale in 2008, I turned around and bought a Carvin guitar kit and used Fender strat. So in my case, I bought new, sold used, and bought one new and one used. That one guitar turned into four transactions.

Govan could have leveraged his short term stint in Steven Wilson's band but reportedly wanted to widdle fast in his solos when Wilson asked him to keep that to a minimum. He left Wilson's band at a time when Wilson's profile just kept increasing.
He left to focus on the Aristocrats - admittedly popular among the guitarist/musician set but not necessarily the same listeners of Wilson who could have made his own public profile much higher.

he plays barefoot and is a vegetarian .... I'd bail on the guy too.
On the other hand, he does play PRS so maybe the situation is not hopeless.

He could play much faster if he'd just eat delicious bacon.
