I'm checking out more of his stuff ...his harmonic language is probably about the most sophisticated I've heard, like beyond where Coltrane and even Liebman.
I wonder if Peter has dug into Esen at all? Some of the piano stuff is just awesome.
The really great pianists seem to have some of the most sophisticated harp of ideas...likely because of the nature of the instrument. But people like Brad Mehldau and Dan Wall....just play some incredible stuff.
Onto a slight tangent, I think there is a inverse correlation with the ease of how to play an instrument and the level of its top players. For instance guitar is a pain to play for many people...literally a pain...but you can teach someone on the piano all the notes, a bunch of chords (and inversions) and some songs...all in the first lesson. They're basically 6 months ahead of a guitarist after the first lesson and it seems in a year they're even more ahead. Therefore to be considered a good pianist...you have to be a monster player.
Anyways...Esen seems like a talent like Rhames and Roll but since he didn't die he hasn't got quite as much more (though looking around the internet there is a lot of lore)

Actually when I hear this kind of stuff I just want to dive full deep end to this kind of harmonic language. There is no chance for profit at all and I dabble in it, but this is kind of the epitome of music to me...like the ultimate freedom of expression. Just seemingly having all possible harmonic devices at your disposal and not ever playing the same thing twice but the music is always moving forward.
It's been awhile since I geeked out about a musician so much...haha.

Oh man - more chops than the local butcher! Okay, I'd like to hear a lot more from that guy.
If you like that kind of thing, it kind of reminds me a bit of the of the synth playing on this live Zappa track (with the same drummer - Vinnie Colauita is amazing): soloists are Peter Wolf (not the J. Geils singer - the guy from Vienna) on first mini-moog synth solo then Tommy Mars does his solo:
