.....and completely forget huge chunks of the material.
I took a three+ month break from my band and I forgot the existence of two entire songs, basically newer stuff that wasn't properly recorded yet.
Luckily I made a demo of one and found a youtube clip from a show of another.
The nature of the material isn't making this any easier.

I've been there. I played many shows where I'd turn around to the drummer or look over to the bassist and ask them to hum the riff of the song because I couldn't remember a damn bit of it and I wrote it all.

Definitely been there. Red Side Visible i have charts for every note, but other bands... I'm like, shit, I hope I have a recording.

Try ten years. Or more. I've always been the "arbiter of what was played" since my memory has serviced me well. I am concerned since there have been rumblings of occasional reformations of stuff going back two decades. Not sure you can rely on me then.

Got together with the drummer of my last band in San Antonio a few years ago, and we were definitely no longer grooving. His wife even commented on it and said, "You guys are out of practice." I miss having a band sometimes.

Yeah, the first rehearsal when I got back together with the drummer from my first band was pretty lousy (he'd been out of practice for probably 12 years thanks to kidney troubles) but we started working and stuff tightened up. The funny thing is he's recording a self-composed record called DASHES AND DOTS ( based completely on moving pixels on a screen in cubase and using virtual instruments) and then wants me to play guitar to the impossible stuff he wrote. He doesn't really have a knowledge of music theory except for having listened to progressive rock since he was 10 years old. It's really weird stuff. You might even get to hear some of it someday.

Sounds like something I would want to hear

Some of it is just....musically wrong. Some of it is (as self described by my drummer friend) "Miles Davis and King Crimson got together and smoked a bowl". Uh, well, it's weird.
