I disagree with Pat a bit on this and would say "No", to me there should be no hallowed ground, within reason.
I think that is "jazz" or "improvisation" is about moving the music forward, there is no reason someone shouldn't be free to interpret anything. Some will float your boat, most will not. To say that Kenny G (who I think sucks) is not allowed to record this because he is not vetted as OK by the jazz police is obnoxious. Who put Pat in charge? A lot of people found (or found) bebop and free jazz horrible at one time.
That being said I do find overdubbing onto existing recordings to be odd / creepy. He would have been better off recording his own version.

Thing about Metheny, I've never heard anything from him that I thought put him in a noticeably superior class to Kenny G. Haven't dug very deep, but nothing I heard compelled me to.

Here's my Kenny G story.
A guy I know (a really good classical guitar player) comes home to find a message on his answering machine. I will try to approximate it in text:
"Hi, um... this is Kenny G. Yeah, I uh... I got your number from (X) and I was wondering... so I'm throwing this party on Sunday, and I was wondering if you could come and play some classical guitar stuff.* Yeah, give me a call back... OK, bye."
*Yes, he really did say "classical guitar stuff."
Guy calls him back, and asks for a little more info. Kenny G tells him how long the party is and quotes him a price.
"Well, that's about half of what I would normally charge for an event that long."
And he replied...
... wait for it...
...
...
...
"Yeah, but I'm Kenny G."
Yes, he really did.

Nice story bro, but he's right, it's Kenny F-ing G! Haha.
There are some good Metheny things, and he's just an absolute monster of a player. I don't thing the Pat Metheny Group, but I think his jazz playing is really pretty great. The live trio records he did about 12 years ago or so, are really good in my opinion. Also the stuff he did with Brecker is pretty good too.
I personally don't think Kenny G and him are even comparable on a level of musicianship.
Saying that, I have a much different opinion of his comments about KG now then I did when I first heard them forever ago, in that there seems to be double standards set by some jazz superstars, and that's bullshit. Either people should be able to play over top of someone else record, or they can't(my vote).

As far as Pat Metheny goes, avoid the Pat Metheny Group. Really, best to avoid anything with Lyle Mays on it.
Most of the trio stuff is pretty good.
"Bright Sized Life" is the one everyone starts with (Unquity Road is a really cool tune, IMO)
"Rejoicing" with Charlie Haden and Jack DeJohnette is probably my favorite.

Funny Kenny G story!
Of all of Metheny's recent works this is my favorite - let me state that I prefer the studio version (here):
Ah but this live version lets us in on kind of a secret - that Lyle Mays is playing guitar during part of the performance.
I just love how the energy keeps relentlessly building. And what's amazing to me is I didn't even know Lyle Mays could play guitar, it's then basically playing the theme in unison.
And if you want to hear where a lot of the ASB sound came from check out Metheny/Mays "As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls". HUGE influence.

I think some of the Metheny group material is excellent, though it's like most artists for me: you have to dig through the crap to find the gems.
One thing that is hard to debate is that Pat is probably the most influential jazz musician/composer of the modern era, at least of the forward-thinking variety.

I may have mentioned my Kenny G story before, but I got Kenny G'd to death at a live concert at Centurian in South Africa. The other guy on the bill was George Benson. They both did sets and then came on together for a session. Most bizarre. (George was pretty good)

George is such an amazing guitarist....but it's hard not to gibe him for creating smooth jazz, haha.

years ago I found a GB interview online and he rhetorically asked why his family should suffer for his art in defending his move to soul-pop and the comments from readers were very hostile and insisted that he should be making art and fuck all that normal life stuff....comments made, I'm sure, from a bunch of middle-aged white guys who have day jobs as insurance sales, accountants, and whatnot....
